Great Family Fun Day

family fun

Saturday was such a beautiful day here in Birmingham, AL. The weather was perfect, not too cold, not too hot; just perfect!!!
It was a great day to be outside, and that is how me and my family like to spend our weekends.
Family fun

Lucas had a great time, playing with our neighbors, feeding the ducks, playing with our dog and our neighbor’s dogs.
family fun

We decided to paint outside, so we got paper, paint, brush and sponges and sat on the table to start our painting. We had a great time. Lucas not only paints his paper, but also Mommy's face too. We ended up with the 3 of us with our nose painted and laughing in front of the mirror making silly faces.

What a great time!!!

Number Game

create educational games

I created this game for Lucas to play thinking that it will be a game that will grow with him. There is a lot of ways to play this game, use your imagination and create your rule. Here is some ideas of how we play at my house.
1-      Match colors – Put all colorful bags in a box where your child can not see it. Ask him to close his eyes and pick one bag. Now he needs to match the bag with the numbers colored at the board. (That is how I am playing now with Lucas!)
create educational games

2-      Toss game – Leave the board on the floor and you and your kid will each has his turn to toss the bags trying to get each color closer as you can to its match.
3-      Toss game 2 – Leave the board on the floor, toss the bags on the board trying not to match the colors but getting closer to the highest number on the board, and then ask your kid to add the points he got and your points to see who won the game.
create educational games

4-      Throw the dice – Throw a dice ( I would cover the number 6 if you kid is little so he would not get confused, you can put a smile face there and if he gets it, it means extra points for him.) and try to match the number and the color. If you don’t have that color in your hand, you will try again in your turn.  Whoever puts all his bags on the board first wins the game.
5-      Throw the dice for big kids – Divided the bags between the players. 2 bags to each one, whoever ends his bags first gets the extra bag. Throw the dice 2x. If you have the red bag which is number 3 you need to try to get number 3 on the dice by getting the actual number or adding or subtracting the numbers that you got to see if you can get to 3. Whoever ended with no bags on his hands won the game.
You are teaching colors, numbers, math, vocabulary, follow instructions, practicing motor skills, and more important, having a great time with your son!!!

Tell me how you and your family would play this game.

White Chocolate Popcorn Treats - Valentine's Day

R

Here is a special Valentine's Day treat that you can fix pretty quickly to someone special. I made those for Lucas to give to his teachers with her gifts and I am sure they loved it. Who would not like to get this sweet treat??
It could not go wrong, mixing popcorn, white chocolate and M&Ms together, hummmm.

I do need to tell you that I love to prepare those things for his teachers. That was my first time going out with him to pick a gift for them and then preparing this sweet little treat with lots of love to someone that take such a good care of my baby. They are very special people first for doing what they do everyday and second for loving my baby and caring about him. I love you guys for that!!! Thank you, thank you and thank you!!!
Now, let's go back on how to make those special treats, it is pretty easy.
Pop some popcorn. Melt a bag of white chocolate in the microwave and pour it on top of the popcorn. Add some Valentine M&Ms to it and Mix it. Let it cool and harden so you can package it up pretty and give to someone special!!!
I also want to share this link with you. Here you will find another cute Valentine's Day treat. Let me know if you decided to try it, I may try it too.

So Smart! Review and Giveaway!!!

I am always looking for new activities, good products for my son to play and also learn too. I few weeks ago I found those SO Smart! DVDs that I like. They make learning a fun and motivating thing, and that is all I want for Lucas.  I think this DVD will help Lucas engage with the world around him, and give him a better understanding of the vocabulary he learns every day.
Here is what So Smart! has to say about this product:
"What Makes So Smart! Different?
Since So Smart! pioneered the baby-toddler video category in 1997, a number of other brands have been introduced into the marketplace. But as countless parents, educators and professional organizations will attest, So Smart! remains their top choice. Here are some of the reasons why:
So Smart! uses...
Gently animated, bright colors and simple images that are specially developed for babies and toddlers.
Minimal, smooth scene transitions, choreographed like a ballet of images woven together, while avoiding the use of sudden changes in viewpoint or camera angles, which can confuse and over-stimulate babies and toddlers.
Slow, easy-to-follow pace that encourages interaction and participation—usually in the form of laughing, clapping, "talking," and dancing!
A unique technique that builds each new subject matter using different shapes, creating a puzzle-like effect and the excitement of "What happens next?"
Narration, varied contexts and repetition to introduce first words, allowing babies to grasp the sounds of words and eventually, their meanings. Read our Our Ten Tips on Language for Little Ones.
Original artwork and adorable characters that are engaging for this age group.
Specially-selected classical music, or original music scores, that are enjoyable for both little ones and their parents!
additional activities that are included in each DVD, for parents and children to do together."
You can purchase your own So Smart DVD here.

What I did like about the DVD:
Pictures- I like how they did not over stimulated the pictures and background with too much color or graphics. The pictures are clear, with bright colors and pretty simple.
Storyline – The stories are related to a kid day by day activity such as playing outside in the mud, hearing the phone ring.
Short Clips – The DVD is divided into 5 segments, what makes it just long enough to catch a toddlers attention.
Activities – This DVD has additional printable activities for your child.
My suggestions;
I do think that the story could happen a little faster than it is. It does take a little long to for example to change images. Other than that I would recommend this DVD to anyone.
Here is how you can win one SO Smart! DVD.

What a good mess!!!

I am not the best painter, and to be honest I am closer to be the worse painter ever, but I still love to paint and believe me, sometimes I do hang some of my “beautiful Paints” at home.
Lucas paints/draws are something else. I love all of it. He still on the phase of circles, dots, learning that the mark on the paper is a consequence of his movements, moving his entire body with his hands to draw, using both hands some of the times. He is learning, he is my little scientist that is testing some new things every day, and I feel like the luckiest mother in the earth to be able to experiment it with him.
Here is an idea for all moms: Once a month or so give your kid a paper and a pencil and let him draw what he wants without any interfere. When he gets a little more verbal you can ask him about his draw and write his words on the BACK of his paper, and date it. You will be amazed with his development and how cute is to see it. I used to do that with my students in Brazil and give it to their parents in the end of the year. That was a good way to keep track of their development and a good memory book to parents to keep forever.

Last week we decided to paint. I am always paint on my kitchen since is too cold to paint outside and my kitchen floor is very easy to clean, so I don’t care if he spills paint all over it.
I gave him a big paper, paint, brush and sponges. He did like the brushes and did try the sponges, but what he loves the most was to use his body to paint. He first put his fingers on the paint, than his hands, his legs, feet…oh, what a good mess!!!
